I thought about the lion sometimes as I walked around camp. It felt strangely communal. I was sharing space with the lion. Sacred space.

I was so moved when I watched that horse roll. I understood that the horse simply wanted to roll, a completely normal thing for a horse, and the horse felt safe enough in that moment to do so. Yet, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of a belonging as I watched the horse roll and as we stood there with all of them. All of us together at the watering hole. Hanging out together. The same horses we shared lunch with yesterday. I felt a sense of community with these wild horses.

We rode in silence. An intent to peacefully be with the land. A choice to quietly snake through the desert disrupting as little as possible. It was relaxing. I imagine that our string of horses probably enjoyed it more, too, than the chatty rides they often work. A walking meditation on horseback.

This is the first of four stories I want to share about my time with the wild mustangs out west. I am not a writer, but you will see that my writing is better than my photos. I never feel the need for the latest and greatest cell phone until I want better pictures. But, I was too immersed in the experience to take many photos anyway. I had my phone with me, but it was turned off and tucked away in my saddle bag most of the time. I write to remember.

"Tell them we have a date," says James. "I'll be in that animal communication class." I do have an introduction to animal communication class that I am teaching online next week, but I never would have guessed that he would want to talk about it!

"After a quiet start to the year that we all needed (we were wrapping things up karmically and collectively), we are now ready to get going again. Jump on the bandwagon! Join something! Say yes!"

"I invite everyone who comes across my message to honor and respect all that you do for others, your family, your kin. It is no small feat. It should be honored."

As I sat with her, fully witnessing all she was feeling, we started to release a lot of the emotions trapped in her energy field. She let go of bitterness from her mouth, anger from her throat, sadness from her heart, betrayal from her belly, and loneliness seemed to pour out from the very center of her core. She felt what it was like to not contain energy, but to find the flow, the release, the true letting go.

Sometimes glory is in the hidden and the unspoken.

"What do you want for Christmas, James?"

"Notice the fullness of the moon. It is quite spectacular. In that fullness there is a completion, just like there is a completion in a sunset, and now the moon has already has started to wane."

You can't force the letting go. But, you can create space for it. Sometimes we need to hold onto things. We can hold on until we are ready to let them go. That's ok. When the road forward is unclear, sometimes we just wait.

A few weeks ago I took my dog Pepper on her annual hiking vacation. We have been doing these hiking vacations for years. They started when Pepper was just three or four years old. My neighbor friend had a condo in Mount Crested Butte. So every year Pepper and I would make that our base camp for our long hikes in the Maroon Bells. A feral pup before I rescued her from death row, Pepper has always seemed most at home in the mountains.

There is a healing power for the soul in the sound of the rain.

"Go slow. Watch and observe everything. There is much to be learned from observation. It's a trait many humans lack. Most humans are too busy talking. And, just too dang busy. Equestrians, too. It gets in the way of true partnership with us. Equestrians say they want to partner with us. But, they have no idea how to partner! They are too busy with their bodies to ever listen to what we are saying. True partnership is listening."
