You Take Care Of Me, And I'll Take Care Of You.

I remember the moment James and I made a pact. He was in one of the feeding stalls munching on the grain and supplements I had prepared for him. He loved living full-time out in the pasture, but the daily extra meal was a bonus that had come with me as his new owner. I had just recently acquired him. My first horse. I rode him a year before I was able to “steal” him from my trainer, so I knew exactly what I was getting. I had won the jackpot the day James became mine. I felt like the luckiest girl in the world.

I said to James, “You take care of me, and I’ll take care of you.” I remember James’ energy feeling so happy in that moment. Maybe it was just because he was eating his tasty grain. Maybe it was because he felt he had hit the jackpot, too? James’ reply was “DEAL!” And, with that one word came a flood of energy from him that felt like happiness, satisfaction, eagerness and commitment. A moment I have never forgotten. “Deal.” We had made a pact.

He has kept his end of the bargain. He has taken care of me in every way possible. Another moment that stands out for me was when we were walking into the ring for our first show of the season. It was a big moment for me that day because I never rode as a kid. I was an adult learning to ride, and both James and I were going to show at 3 foot for the first time. Sitting atop James, I gathered the reins and lifted through my center. I focused my mind on the course of jumps in front of me. I felt our minds and hearts connect. Then his back lifted, and his energy rose up underneath me. That moment of his energy lifting underneath me told me everything I needed to know. I could feel him saying “I’m ready. I’ve got you. Whatever you want to do, I’ll make it happen for you.”

I still come to the barn to feed and care for him just as I promised on that day nine years ago. We take walks. We graze. We share energy. But, we don’t show anymore. I don’t get to feel him lift himself up underneath me. He no longer sprouts wings so we can fly through the air together as one.

But he still has my back in other ways. And I promised I’d be with him until his last breath. I have given James impeccable care and have put him first the last 10 years of my life. In exchange I have had the gift of partnering with the most authentic and magnificent soul I have ever met. He has offered a sacredness and grace that defies earthly reality. He stands above any human I have known. He still does.

It has been the best deal I have ever made.
