Why Not Just Take A Nap?

Writer's picture: Asha WolfAsha Wolf

With the changing of the clocks awhile back and the sun rising much earlier, I’ve been springing out of bed around 5am. My dogs, especially my older one who LOVES food, is quite thrilled about this because it means she gets her breakfast much earlier, and then can enjoy a lovely nap in the warm sun before her morning walk. I like to get up and get going in the morning, so it is a productive time of day for me. However, especially with the earlier rise and shine time, I find myself struggling to keep going in the afternoon. I’ve been trying to push through it, but have been hitting a wall.

James pops into my head: “Why not just take a nap? All of us other animals do it. When we feel like napping we nap!” I could feel him just shaking his head at the silliness of us humans. “It doesn’t take long to feel rejuvenated. A power nap. Isn’t that what you humans call it? Take a power nap every day!” I could feel James’ pride and satisfaction in having solved my problem for me.

It is true that I have never witnessed James’ naps to be more than 20 minutes. When I get to the barn and I see him laying down taking a nap, I never disturb him. I just go get his grain ready or sit on the fence rail and wait for him. I know he’ll be done with his nap and back on his feet in only a few minutes.

So this week I started following James’ advice and began taking 15-20 minute power naps! I will report that James is right. (For the record, he’s always right.) I have been feeling restored. Problem is solved. The only thing missing is some fresh hay to nap on like James has! If you’re a horsey person, you’ll agree.
