James and My Niece

Late last Thursday evening my sister, brother and my brother’s daughter, Joy, arrived in town for a visit. Their first request Friday morning was to see James! While spending some time at the barn, my brother captured this beautiful moment of my niece with James.

Each week I first connect with James to create the words for the post, and then find or take a photo to go along with what James has to share. However, this week I really wanted to use this photo that my brother took of my niece. So, I tried asking James what he wanted to say that was relevant to this photo. After I had channeled his musings, I read over what I had written. At first I didn’t think that what James said was particularly on task to my request. But, after reading his words several times, I realized that what he shared was, indeed, quite relevant. Through James talking about his relationship with me, he was speaking for all of us. He was acknowledging our extended family, our relatives that live far away, and those cherished members of our tribe that we see all too infrequently:

“Relationships are important. Connection is important. I love the innocence of someone who isn’t around horses a lot, especially when they approach me with respect and openness.”

“I loved when your family and I walked as a herd down the road together. I loved that they wanted to spend time with me.”

“I hope they could see how bonded we are to each other. That’s what matters to me. I know our worlds stay somewhat apart because you don’t live in the pasture with me. But, you are part of my family. I loved being able to meet part of yours.”  -James
