A couple of days ago I was walking James in from the pasture to bring him to his bucket of grain. As we walked, I asked him how his day was going. He spoke about the birds, like he was sharing something about them, but I didn’t quite pick up on what he was saying. For this week’s post, I asked him to share with me what he tried to tell me earlier. There was a sweetness and lightness to his words, but a bit of sadness, too. This is what James shared:
“I’ve been communing with all of my nature friends lately. More than I usually do. It has been really interesting. There is a busyness as everyone gets ready to winter. I notice the mix between basking in the warm autumn sun (sometimes they are lazy) and then the burst into action with the winter preparations.
I think I like the birds the most! They share their experiences with me sometimes. I try to imagine what it is like to not be so tethered to the ground. To be airborne!
Like a movie, the birds will show me their view. It is like I’m seeing the land from their vantage point in the sky while they are flying. They are so tiny compared to me, but I like the view they get to have.
I definitely feel the pull of gravity more as I get older. Gravity tugs at my body. Even my organs.
Birds defy gravity. I like to imagine I am a bird as I eat my hay.” --James
